Face Mask: How to Choose the Best Mask for Your Skin?

Face Mask: How to Choose the Best Mask for Your Skin?

Hydrating, purifying, soothing, or brightening: the face mask has become a staple in skincare routines and K-Beauty. But with sheet masks, hydrogels, clay masks, and formulas enriched with active ingredients, it's not always easy to know which one to choose.

A good mask isn't necessarily the one with the most ingredients or that promises the most spectacular results. The most important thing is to select a formula suited to your skin's needs.

So, which face mask should you choose for dry, oily, sensitive, dull, or mature skin? Which ingredients should you prioritize? And how should you properly integrate it into your skincare routine?

Here's our guide.

Why use a face mask?

The face mask is a complementary treatment that allows you to specifically target certain skin needs.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), masks can help to hydrate the skin, support the skin barrier, or target certain visible signs of aging, depending on their formulation.

However, they do not replace the fundamentals of a good routine: gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection.

The benefit of a mask lies particularly in its contact time with the skin, which allows the ingredients to remain applied for several minutes.

Its effectiveness therefore depends primarily on its formulation and the active ingredients it contains.

Which face mask to choose according to your skin type?

Not all masks are suitable for all skin types. To choose the right product, start by identifying your main concern.

Dry or dehydrated skin: prioritize a hydrating mask

Does your skin feel tight or lack suppleness?

Opt for a hydrating face mask containing ingredients capable of retaining water in the superficial layer of the skin and supporting its protective barrier.

Among the interesting ingredients:

  • hyaluronic acid;

  • glycerin;

  • ceramides;

  • colloidal oatmeal.

Hyaluronic acid is particularly used in hydrating treatments for its ability to retain water.

Sheet masks and hydrogel masks are thus particularly popular in Korean routines focused on hydration.

Oily or blemish-prone skin: choose suitable active ingredients

Oily skin does not need to be aggressively "stripped."

The goal is rather to control excess sebum while preserving the skin barrier.

According to the AAD, certain ingredients can be particularly beneficial for oily or blemish-prone skin:

  • salicylic acid (BHA);

  • glycolic or lactic acids (AHA);

  • niacinamide;

  • kaolin;

  • bentonite.

Clay masks can notably help to absorb excess sebum.

However, be careful not to use too many exfoliating products in the same routine: excessive use of acids or other exfoliating active ingredients can promote irritation and dryness.

Sensitive skin: prioritize soothing

For sensitive skin, it's better to choose a simple formula and avoid using too many potentially irritating active ingredients.

Among the ingredients cited by dermatologists for dry or sensitive skin are:

  • hyaluronic acid;

  • ceramides;

  • glycerin;

  • colloidal oatmeal;

  • green tea extract.

Conversely, fragrances, essential oils, and overly aggressive exfoliants may be poorly tolerated by some sensitive skin types.

If you are using a new mask, ideally perform a patch test on a small area of skin first.

Dull skin: which mask to restore radiance?

When the main goal is to improve the appearance of a dull or uneven complexion, look more at the ingredient list than the commercial name of the mask.

Vitamin C is notably used in cosmetics for its antioxidant properties and its action on skin radiance.

Other K-Beauty formulas combine hydrating ingredients with active ingredients designed to gradually improve the appearance and uniformity of the complexion.

Hydration itself can also temporarily contribute to giving the skin a smoother and brighter appearance.

Mature skin: peptides, hydration, and antioxidants

For skin showing visible signs of skin aging, the AAD notably cites among the interesting ingredients:

  • peptides;

  • vitamin C;

  • AHAs;

  • bakuchiol;

  • hyaluronic acid.

Hydration also plays an important aesthetic role: properly hydrated skin can temporarily appear smoother and plumper.

What about collagen masks?

Collagen masks, especially hydrogel masks inspired by K-Beauty, are enjoying significant success.

However, it is necessary to distinguish between observable cosmetic benefits and certain marketing promises.

A clinical study published in 2024 specifically on a native collagen sheet mask observed improvements in hydration and certain parameters of skin appearance.

This does not mean, however, that all masks containing collagen produce the same results: effectiveness depends on the product's formulation, associated ingredients, and conditions of use.

To choose a collagen mask, therefore, focus on the entire formula, and not just the word "collagen" on the packaging.

Sheet mask or hydrogel mask: what's the difference?

Sheet masks play an important role in Korean beauty routines.

Impregnated with an essence or serum, they keep the formula in contact with the skin during the application time.

Hydrogel masks, on the other hand, use a gel-like texture that typically conforms closely to the contours of the face.

Both formats are particularly popular for treatments focused on hydration and skin comfort.

However, the format remains secondary: it is primarily the ingredients and formulation that should guide your choice.

How long should you leave a face mask on?

Longer does not necessarily mean more effective.

A randomized clinical trial published in 2024 compared several application durations for sheet masks. Researchers found favorable short-term effects on hydration for durations under 25 minutes, while prolonged use could increase dryness and redness.

The safest rule therefore remains very simple:

always respect the application time indicated by the manufacturer.

Allowing a sheet mask to dry completely on the face or arbitrarily doubling its application time is not recommended.

How to apply your face mask correctly?

1. Cleanse your skin

Start with clean skin to remove makeup, excess sebum, and impurities.

2. Apply the mask

For a sheet mask or hydrogel mask, gently position it on your face.

For a rinse-off mask, apply it according to the manufacturer's instructions, generally avoiding the immediate eye and lip area.

3. Respect the application time

Follow the instructions on the product precisely.

Do not deliberately leave your mask on much longer in the hope of getting more results.

4. Remove or rinse off the mask

For a sheet mask or hydrogel mask, gently remove it.

If it is a rinse-off mask, use lukewarm water and avoid aggressively rubbing your skin.

5. Continue your skincare routine

Depending on the type of mask and the manufacturer's instructions, continue your routine with your usual products.

After a rinse-off mask, a moisturizing cream can especially help maintain skin comfort and hydration.

How often should you use a face mask?

There is no universal frequency suitable for all masks.

It depends on:

  • the type of mask;

  • its concentration of active ingredients;

  • your skin type;

  • the other products in your routine.

A gentle hydrating mask and an exfoliating AHA/BHA mask, for example, are not necessarily used with the same frequency.

The AAD recommends above all to follow product instructions and avoid unnecessarily accumulating similar active ingredients.

Mistakes to avoid with your face mask

To enjoy your mask without sensitizing your skin, avoid:

  • choosing a mask solely because it's trendy;

  • multiplying exfoliating active ingredients in the same routine;

  • systematically exceeding the application time;

  • continuing use in case of burning, itching, or irritation;

  • considering the mask as a replacement for your daily routine.

If you experience significant tingling, burning, or itching, remove the product immediately.

The face mask in a K-Beauty routine

In a Korean skincare routine, the mask is primarily a complementary treatment.

It can be used after cleansing and the preparatory steps of the routine, depending on the chosen product, and then followed by suitable treatments.

The benefit of K-Beauty is not necessarily to accumulate the maximum number of steps: the goal is rather to select products consistent with your skin's needs.

Collagen hydrogel mask, hydrating sheet mask, soothing mask, or mask targeting pore appearance: choose primarily based on your skin and your current routine.

The objective: to allow you to choose your mask according to your skin's real needs rather than unrealistic promises.

In summary: how to choose your face mask?

To find the best face mask for your skin, start by identifying your main need.

Dry skin will primarily look for hydrating and skin barrier-protecting ingredients. Oily skin can opt for niacinamide, certain acids, or clay. Sensitive skin will prefer gentle formulas, while mature skin may seek hydration, peptides, and antioxidants.

Whatever mask you choose, follow its instructions for use and consider it for what it truly is: a complementary treatment to an adapted skincare routine, not a miracle product.
